When Simon Callaghan made the bold decision to move his training base from Newmarket to Santa Anita, it was surely in the hope that he could compete at the Breeders' Cup. Thus far, success on American racing's grandest stage has eluded him, but in Moonshine Memories he may have a filly to change all of that.
Callaghan has gone from strength-to-strength since moving to the United States in 2009 and has already recorded a number of Grade 1 wins, although nothing that could match the prestige of a victory in the Juvenile Fillies.
Moonshine Memories is unbeaten in three starts thus far, having made all to win a maiden before being stepped up to Grade 1 company just two weeks later. That she was able to win is testament to her ability, as she once again made the running and held on in gritty fashion.
On her latest start, in the Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes, the daughter of Malibu Moon showed that she wasn't just a one-dimensional front-runner, displaying a versatility that will stand her in good stead. Moonshine Memories was able to stalk this time around, tracking pace-setting favourite Alluring Star, a Bob Baffert-trained filly who carried a lofty reputation, and moved up the challenge approaching the straight. She was soon on top, showing a good attitude and good stamina down the lane to the wire.
It goes without saying that the Juvenile Fillies will be the toughest race Moonshine Memories has contested to date, and she is likely to face some strong opponents including the Alcibiades winner Heavenly Love, but she looks to have all the tools to make a bold bid on November 4th.
